About Community Clash

Healthiest city wins.
You play the cards.

Community Clash is an online card game that engages you in a discovery of your community's health and well-being status, and lets you see how it compares to other communities in a head-to-head clash. Play endless hands, exploring different metrics and locations each time, and share key victories with your friends. You can also personalize the experience by getting your own well-being score and using it in the clashes.

“Our goal was to create a fun way to interact with data and, along the way, learn something about yourself, your friends and your community that might motivate you to act.” - Chris Cartter, General Manager

Why We Created Community Clash

Community Clash was created in response to a White House led challenge, the Community Health Data Initiative (CHDI). CHDI is “a public-private collaboration that is encouraging innovators to utilize community health data to develop applications that help raise awareness of community health performance and spark action to improve health.”

Not surprisingly, our solution was to create a game! Community Clash is a health data game designed to take your typical “wall of statistics” and make it easy to discover the meaning of the health metrics that characterize communities.

“Gaming provides an interactive framework to process information that can be applied to almost anything.” - Trapper Markelz, Head of Product

When we started, we had lots of questions. Can we help you remember the obesity, smoking, motor vehicle accident rate of your community? Can we create an educational tool that's also interactive and involves your friends and family? Can we decipher a mash-up of health data to get to the root of interesting, compelling information? Can we inspire you to DO something!

You play the cards!

Sources of Data for Community Clash

The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being IndexTM (WBI)

The WBI is the official statistic of the pulse of well-being in America. Based on a national survey completed each day by Gallup of 1,000 individuals, the WBI is comprised of 6 areas of interest: Life Evaluation, Healthy Behaviors, Emotional Health, Physical Health, Work Evaluation and Basic Access. The WBI serves as a benchmark and comparison metric for communities, states, researchers and policy makers. WBI data for Community Clash was calculated at the county and state level by MeYou Health from Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index 2009 and 2010 survey data.

The Healthways Well-Being AssessmentSM (WBA)

The WBA is a NCQA-accredited survey of individual well-being that provides a baseline measure, produces a personal Healthways Well-Being PlanSM (WBP), and allows for regular evaluation of progress toward well-being improvement. The output of the WBA can also be aggregated and used by organizations and communities to guide them in their efforts to create environments that support general well-being improvement across their workforce and population, as well as driving the stable of Healthways well-being improvement solutions. The WBA encompasses the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being IndexTM and also includes a more detailed assessment of health risks and productivity impact.
